What Is the Gamepad Stick Drift & Deadzone Visualizer?

Stick drift is a hardware degradation where the potentiometers inside an analog stick report a non-zero position even when your thumb is completely relaxed. The result is unintended camera movement, character walking, or cursor drift in games. This visualizer reads your controller's raw analog axis values through the browser's HTML5 Gamepad API and displays them as a live XY scatter plot with motion trails. A configurable virtual deadzone ring lets you see which controllers have drift that exceeds typical game thresholds.

How It Works

The tool polls navigator.getGamepads() every animation frame at ~60Hz. Each frame, it reads the four axis values — leftX, leftY, rightX, rightY — normalizes them to a -1 to +1 coordinate space, and plots them on the SVG disc. The deadzone circle represents the configured threshold: any movement inside this circle is mathematically zeroed out. Movement outside the ring drives the stick visualization. A 35-frame position trail reveals drift patterns.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1Connect your controller via USB or pair it via Bluetooth.
2Press any button once — browsers require user interaction to recognize gamepads.
3Completely release both thumbsticks and watch the tracker dots.
4If the dots stray beyond the orange deadzone circle without touching the sticks, you have stick drift.
5Use the Deadzone Threshold slider to match your favorite game's anti-drift filter.
6Click "Reset Peaks" to clear the peak drift measurement and start fresh.

Technique Tips & Hardware Facts

Potentiometer Wear

Most controller stick drift is caused by worn carbon potentiometer tracks inside the thumbstick mechanism. Dust, oils, and heavy use grind away the conductive material, causing unstable readings.

Compressed Air Fix

Lightly spraying compressed air or electronics contact cleaner (WD-40 Contact Cleaner, not WD-40 lubricant) into the base of the thumbstick can temporarily improve drift on dusty or sticky pots.

Deadzone vs. Drift

Game deadzone settings hide drift software-side but don't fix the hardware. Drift that exceeds your game's maximum deadzone setting will still appear as in-game movement.

Hall Effect Sticks

Controllers with Hall Effect magnetic sensors (e.g., Gulikit, KontrolFreek Omni) have no physical contact in the sensing element and are immune to the carbon wear that causes classical drift.

Warranty Claim

Stick drift is a documented manufacturing defect. Sony and Microsoft have faced class-action suits over it. If your controller is under warranty, file a claim rather than replacing out of pocket.

Frequently Asked Questions

My controller isn't being detected — what should I do?

Press any button or move any stick. Browsers require at least one user gesture on the controller before exposing it via the Gamepad API. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari all support this.

What is a normal drift magnitude?

Values under 2–3% magnitude are typical potentiometer noise. 3–8% can be felt in sensitive games. Over 8% is noticeable drift that will bypass most game deadzone filters.

Can this test my DualSense adaptive triggers?

The Gamepad API exposes trigger values as axes or buttons but does not currently expose adaptive trigger resistance in browsers. Stick axes, face buttons, and bumpers are fully accessible.

Does this work on mobile?

Yes. Pair a Bluetooth controller to your Android or iOS device and open this page in Chrome or Safari. The HTML5 Gamepad API is broadly supported on mobile browsers.

Is my controller data sent anywhere?

No. All gamepad axis and button data is read locally by your browser using a JavaScript API. Nothing is transmitted to any server.
